Celebrating the 2017 Biotech Leaders Academy Cohort

On Friday, August 18, we celebrated the 2017 Biotech Leaders Academy cohort with our students, company partners, and cross-sector leaders. Some of our students from last year's cohort came back to celebrate with us too!

Grifols generously hosted the event on their beautiful campus patio, where students presented their summer internship accomplishments. Through Biotech Leaders Academy, students expereienced and learned about the breadth of the life sciences sector. For example, Luis Nava (intern at LA Cleantech Incubator) designed and developed a new medical device, Carla Gonzalez (intern at Protomer Technologies) carried out research and development on glucose-responsive insulin, and Eric Romero built a 3D printer.

In addition to learning from our students about cutting edge biotech companies and innovations, attendees had the opportunity to mingle other guests from the public, academic, nonprofit, and bioscience sectors.

LA Bioscience Hub, the Office of Supervisor Hilda Solis, and the Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti recognized the students for their summer achievements. We also recognized our Company Partners for their contributions to making LA's bioscience industry more inclusive of students and residents in East Los Angeles.

This summer concludes another successful year of having a real impact in the lives of our students - propelling them further towards their goals in the bioscience sector by creating new and critical access to opportunities, experiences, and networks. If you'd like to support the continuation and growth of the Biotech Leaders Academy, please consider making a donation here.

LA's Bioscience Community Gathers at Cal State LA Downtown Center for Innovator Spotlight

Cal State LA works with industry partners to promote bioscience innovation and support the growth of the bioscience industry in Southern California. On July 25, LA BioStart and Cal State LA's College of Professional and Global Education hosted a networking event at the Cal State LA Downtown Center. More than 80 entrepreneurs, life science executives, faculty, students, and other business community members gathered together for a biotech innovator spotlight. The event is part of an ongoing series of industry convenings designed to bring the local bioscience community together. The featured innovator speakers was Professor Jill Adler-Moore of Cal Poly Pomona who invented the groundbreaking antifungal drug AmBisome.

The innovator spotlights serve as an important supplement to the more traditional classroom instruction modules of the LA BioStart program. Jose A. Gomez, Executive Vice President and Chairman of the Advisory Board for Cal State LA's LA BioSpace Incubator, noted, "these events are a great way to get folks out of their labs and offices for a bit to enjoy each other’s company and make connections. Sometimes great ideas and inspiration come from these encounters."
