Biotech Leaders Academy

Celebrating Bioscience Entrepreneurship!

We're declaring August Bioscience Entrepreneurship Month!

Just last week, we celebrated the accomplishments of our 3rd cohort of students in the Biotech Leaders Academy. The event was graciously hosted by East LA Community College and we were joined by Supervisor Hilda Solis who shared the importance of cultivating a locally-grown bioscience workforce. Biotech Leaders Academy is a summer program that creates new professional opportunities for East LA’s community college students pursuing life sciences degrees by providing them with entrepreneurship training and industry internships. This year we had 12 students complete our entrepreneurship seminar and we were able to place seven of them in summer internships with local biotech companies! Through the Biotech Leaders Academy, we work to support a new generation of biotech leaders that reflect our region's diversity.

And, earlier this month our friends at Cal State LA hosted a graduation ceremony for the 23 emerging bioscience entrepreneurs who completed their LA BioStart Bioscience Entrepreneurs Boot Camp. LA BioStart is an intensive 5-week program where early-stage bioscience entrepreneurs receive training in business fundamentals, financing models, industrial research and development and other tools essential to starting and sustaining successful bioscience ventures. Read more about LA Biostart's event here.

It's exciting to see LA's bioscience ecosystem working to foster science entrepreneurs at all stages in their careers and we're hopeful and excited for our region's future!

You're Invited to our Biotech Leaders Academy Summer Celebration on August 24!

This is a community celebration, bringing together bioscience industry leaders, academics, friends and supporters of the Los Angeles Bioscience Hub. Come meet our students, learn about the great work they're doing this summer, and connect with others in the field.

This celebratory event is made possible with generous support from Wells Fargo, East Los Angeles College, Pasadena City College, and UniHealth Foundation.

About Biotech Leaders Academy:
Biotech Leaders Academy nurtures and expands the Los Angeles region’s entrepreneurial and innovation economy. We are developing a more inclusive local economy by creating opportunities for students from populations that are underrepresented in the biotech industry. This summer, we placed seven diverse, bright students from East LA College and Pasadena City College into paid internships at bioscience companies across LA County. An additional four students joined our cohort to participate in our program’s five-module entrepreneurship seminar about the fundamentals of starting and sustaining a bioscience company.

Celebrating the 2017 Biotech Leaders Academy Cohort

On Friday, August 18, we celebrated the 2017 Biotech Leaders Academy cohort with our students, company partners, and cross-sector leaders. Some of our students from last year's cohort came back to celebrate with us too!

Grifols generously hosted the event on their beautiful campus patio, where students presented their summer internship accomplishments. Through Biotech Leaders Academy, students expereienced and learned about the breadth of the life sciences sector. For example, Luis Nava (intern at LA Cleantech Incubator) designed and developed a new medical device, Carla Gonzalez (intern at Protomer Technologies) carried out research and development on glucose-responsive insulin, and Eric Romero built a 3D printer.

In addition to learning from our students about cutting edge biotech companies and innovations, attendees had the opportunity to mingle other guests from the public, academic, nonprofit, and bioscience sectors.

LA Bioscience Hub, the Office of Supervisor Hilda Solis, and the Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti recognized the students for their summer achievements. We also recognized our Company Partners for their contributions to making LA's bioscience industry more inclusive of students and residents in East Los Angeles.

This summer concludes another successful year of having a real impact in the lives of our students - propelling them further towards their goals in the bioscience sector by creating new and critical access to opportunities, experiences, and networks. Biotech Leaders Academy Returns

We're excited to announce the return of the Biotech Leaders Academy in Summer 2017!

This is a program for bright community college students to (1) connect to meaningful, paid internships in the life sciences industry, and (2) learn the fundamentals of becoming an entrepreneur in this field.

We launched the program in 2016 with overwhelmingly positive feedback from companies and students alike. This year, we have ten students placed in seven local biotech companies across the Los Angeles region. The students are coming from Cal State LA, East LA College, LA City College, and Pasadena City College. Plus, ten additoinal students will participate in our five-week entrepreneurship seminar sessions.

The 2017 program is proudly supported in part by Wells Fargo and East Los Angeles College.
