About Biotech Leaders Academy:
Biotech Leaders Academy nurtures and expands the Los Angeles region’s entrepreneurial and innovation economy. We are developing a more inclusive local economy by creating opportunities for students from populations that are underrepresented in the biotech industry. This summer, we placed seven diverse, bright students from East LA College and Pasadena City College into paid internships at bioscience companies across LA County. An additional four students joined our cohort to participate in our program’s five-module entrepreneurship seminar about the fundamentals of starting and sustaining a bioscience company.

Cal State LA Launches LA BioStart Entrepreneur Boot Camp

In early July, Cal State LA launched the LA BioStart program - a 5-week bioscience entrepreneur boot camp - out of the university's LA BioSpace Incubator. The boot camp is a collaborative effort between Cal State LA, the Biocom Institute, and the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI). The program, funded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration, provides training, mentoring, and business knowledge workshops to start-up companies and other early stage entrepreneurs.

The first cohort consists of eleven participants and applications are being accepted for the Winter 2018 cohort. The LA BioStart training is offered at no cost and led by top industry experts. Workshops cover a wide range of topics related to bioscience business, business fundamentals, and essential leadership skills.

Meet this summer's cohort and read more about the program here.

Undocumented Student STEM Conference

On Saturday, May 27, Cal State LA hosted the first UndocuSTEM Conference at the University Student Union.

The conference provided resources, information, and networking opportunities to undocumented high school, undergraduate, and graduate STEM students about how to be successful in a STEM academic and professional career through student-led workshops and presentations. The event inspired and empowered undocumented students to continue pursuing an academic and professional career in STEM. This conference serves as an important statement of undocumented students' contributions in STEM fields and society as a whole.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Visits LA Bioscience Corridor

On July 8, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, Jay Williams, and LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis visited the LA Bioscience Corridor and toured anchor institutions - Cal State LA and USC Health Sciences Campus. Cal State LA President, William A. Covino and LA Bioscience Hub Secretary and Associate Professor in Biology at Cal State LA, Howard Xu, gave a tour of the campus’ successful STEM programs and shared plans for the future BioSpaceLA, the future LA County-Cal State LA bioscience incubator.

Assistant Secretary Williams’ visit wrapped up with a roundtable discussion that brought together academic, industry, and public leaders to talk with Williams about the potential and opportunities in the LA Bioscience Corridor to create a thriving bioscience ecosystem with a strong pipeline to bioscience careers.

Supervisor Solis is one of several local leaders that supports the creation of a bioscience cluster in East LA, and retaining the region's life sciences talent and jobs. The video below recaps the Los Angeles Biotech Summit from February 2015, which featured public officials and industry leaders expressing excitement for the industry and the Corridor.

“Feasibility Assessment and Master Plan for Advancing the Bioscience Industry Cluster in Los Angeles County,” Released!

The “Feasibility Assessment and Master Plan for Advancing the Bioscience Industry Cluster in Los Angeles County,” report prepared by Battelle Technology Partnership is an in-depth study and set of recommendations on how LA County can nurture and grow its regional bioscience industry. The report highlights that region is poised to create a network of bioscience clusters given its existing research and innovation infrastructure. The LA Bioscience Corridor is one of the three university-anchored areas well-positioned for cluster development. The report also underlines the region’s need for increased investment in commercial bioscience lab space, greater venture capital commitment, and improved regional talent retention – all of which are initiatives the LA Bioscience Hub works to facilitate. Download the full report here.
